Kenya – Mountain of God

Can Mount Pleasant Christian Church, a single church in Greenwood, Indiana, change the world? Yes, we can, and we are – in Kenya! In September 2009, a team of ten traveled on MPCC’s first mission trip to the Mathare Valley in Nairobi, Kenya, a densely populated slum area. This mission is a partnership with Christian Missionary Fellowship International and Missions of Hope International.

The team served hundreds of young children, students and adult slum residents. People lined up for their first opportunity to see a doctor in years at makeshift clinics. The MPCC medical staff treated a variety of needs, even performing minor surgery with no electric power. The doctors and our missions partners from FAME (fameworld.org) also assessed specific needs for the planned construction of a medical clinic within the slum.

Part of their work included performing medical evaluations and prescribing treatments. As one of the nurses, Nicole Kinnaman said, “This trip opened my eyes to the suffering of others. I became aware of how much I have to be thankful for here.”

The team also participated in the ‘Bring the Light’ project, in which a 6″ x 6″ hole was cut in the metal roof of the homes and a piece of Plexiglas was mounted. As sunlight was introduced to many homes for the first time, the team witnessed to the families about Jesus, the Light of the World, and several people committed their lives to Christ.

According to the team leader Dr. Mike Russell, “Mount Pleasant looks forward to a long relationship with our partners in Kenya and their mission of transforming the valley of darkness into the mountain of God.”
