My life before Christ was a long road of searching–for happiness, love and joy. I had no set guidelines and experienced constant disappointments with people, my relationships and myself. Yet I was lucky to have a few people along the way who planted the seed in me to become a Christian. I started attending Mount Pleasant Christian Church (MPCC). Each week’s sermon made such an impression on me and opened my eyes to the joy and love of Jesus Christ.
To know God uses our trials, tribulations, and humility to help others is a wonderful feeling. I am in training now to be a Stephen Minister, which is a rewarding experience for both the care receiver and the caregiver. Not only do students develop listening and understanding skills; we find comfort in our fellow students’ perspectives.
Stephen Ministers are constantly learning and preparing for their care receivers. In 2009 a total of 16 caregivers spent approximately 1,241 hours in education and administrative time. But as all of us would agree, “In helping people, time spent is well worth the commitment.”
I started in Stephen Ministry October 2009, and my group will be commissioned in March 2010. A few Stephen Ministers cannot effectively shepherd so many desperate and hurting souls. We need volunteers. Consider walking with us in our journey of helping others. The rewards are great and satisfaction is guaranteed.
